By Tanya Goodwin
Thanks to the autumn time change, I had an extra hour of sleep last night, which is great because I start another week of a heavy patient schedule, being on call, and of course writing in between. But I also needed the rest after a hectic Saturday. Yesterday was my friend’s and mine last official board and general meetings as board members of the Romance Writers of America New York City chapter.
Change
About a year ago, we stopped going out for drinks and dinner after the monthly meetings, having a variety of personal commitments, meaning life, interrupt our get togethers.
Change
Well it was time to celebrate. Not only was Saturday our last stint as board members, but we were both finally having our novels published after years of critiques, queries, and venting phone calls. My friend had called me on a Monday, giddy with the news of a contract for her book. After we stopped screaming, I let her go to continue her happy dance. How wonderful! My friend was being published. No lie, two hours later, on that very same Monday, I see an email from my agent, Kate Folkers. There was an attachment that said “contract”. What the heck was this? I opened it. A contract from Knight romance Publishing filled my computer screen. Needless to say, I was on the phone to my friend. We were stunned. We couldn’t have made this up if we wanted to.
Change
So we decided to stop at the Cosmetic Market on east 37th Street before dinner and drinks. My friend raved about the deals at this place. I had just restocked my supply at my personal cosmetic mecca, Sephora, the other day, but having never been there, I’d check the place out. I left this mega deal store with two bags.
Change
We headed to one of our favorite spots for drinks and dinner on 35th Street. The wind whipped around us and rattled our bags from the Cosmetic Market. We entered The Playwrite/The Irish Pub, a warm refuge from the Manhattan chill. I ordered a burger and a beer, having not had either in long time.
Change
My friend and I toasted our rocky road as board members and now to be published authors. It was a paradoxically sunny albeit windy autumn afternoon when we entered, but a calm cool evening when we left.
Change
Luckily, her bus to Staten Island pulled up. I waved to her as I strode up Fifth Avenue on my way to Grand Central Station to catch the train home, humming to myself, the evening stroll so pleasant. I walked among New Yorkers dressed in their coats, scarves, conversing, hugging one another, their arm filled with packages. I love autumn in New York.
Change
I walked past the historical New York Public Library. I gazed at the lion statues flanking the tiered stone steps to the main building. This place beckons you inside to peruse the books, run your fingers along the spines, and smell the pages. Publishing is in an ever, frantic flux, but I can’t help but yearn for a physical book. But then again, I do like my Kindle. Perhaps there will be a peaceful coexistence.
Change.
